ABOUT

Taipei Railway Workshop was completed in 1935, the same year as The Taiwan Exposition. It was the prosperous period in modernism and machine age. For example, The High Line in New York City was built in 1934, and Walter Benjamin published his key work 〈Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction) 〉in 1935. Taipei Railway Workshop was significant then not only as the largest train repair plant in East Asia, but also as a landmark that connected Taiwan to the world in the modernization process.

Located between Songshan Cultural and Creative Park and Civic Boulevard, the vast Taipei Railway Workshop is a downtown secret to many residents. After designated as national heritage in 2015, it is planned to build Taiwan Railway Museum in this premise. As large as two-thirds of Daan Park, how should this site transform from a plant to a museum connected to future? To initiate discussions, this exhibition invites six design teams in Taiwan, USA, and Japan to focus on major outdoor cranes on site. Based on trains, machines, and archaeology, we discover spatial elements from various layers in Taipei Railway Workshop, such as tracks and cranes, maintenance tunnels, foundations, walking scale, soil and plants, and large machines. These elements can create new feelings and experiences.

Lost and Found: Re-envisioning the Machine Age invites the public to imagine the future of Taipei Railway Workshop together. Through open format, the exhibition invites audience to contribute design ideas. Besides proposals by international teams, guided tours will introduce objects and memories left from machine age in Taipei Railway Workshop to participants. We hope the public can recover them with different perspectives and generate new possibilities.
